There are creative ways to build a strong team and foster employee loyalty without breaking the bank. In fact, many workers are even willing to take a pay cut for better work-life balance. So here are a number of ways you can create a better work environment and compensate your employees beyond their paycheck.
It sounds intuitive, but so many companies miss the mark on creating a positive and inclusive company culture where employees feel valued and appreciated. Embody the values you expect. Be responsive, available, and approachable. Encourage teamwork, open communication, and recognize employees’ contributions to foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
Be open to hearing your employee’s longterm goals and supporting them. Even if your employee envisions working somewhere else in the future, investing in their growth can actually increase their length of employment. By providing training and development opportunities like workshops, webinars, or access to online courses, you’re demonstrating a commitment to them and they’ll often in turn do the same for you and your business. Some on-the-job training and continuing education costs may be tax deductible, too.
Flexibility is highly valued by employees, especially in today’s work landscape. Offering remote work options, flexible hours, or compressed workweeks to accommodate different lifestyles and needs can help an employee save on childcare costs or achieve traveling goals, positively contributing to their overall compensation.
Consider introducing performance-based incentives to reward top-performing employees. This could include bonuses, profit-sharing, or commission-based structures that align with your budget. There are even some companies that offer additional paid days off as part of a performance-based incentive.
Many companies think they can’t invest in paid time off for the average 2 weeks per year or at all in some cases. But studies show that the more generous the PTO, the more loyal and productive the employee. Supporting employees in maintaining a healthy work-life balance improves overall job satisfaction and reduces burnout and turnover (which is even more costly).
Develop a creative rewards program to recognize and celebrate employee achievements. So many employers think this needs to be a costly gesture, but research tells us that symbolic recognition has an even more significant and positive impact on performance and retention rates. Something as small as a gift card, team outing, or even a personalized note saying “thank you” can go a long way.
Regularly seek out feedback from your employees. Advice from those deepest in the trenches is invaluable, but employee feedback is often ignored or even discouraged at some companies. You can encourage folks to share ideas in a designated Slack group or in a regular 1-1 meeting (having it as an agenda item for each 1-1 meeting is also helpful). Implementing their suggestions and giving them credit for their ideas, big or small, demonstrates that their voices are valued, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and loyalty.
Provide a clear roadmap for career advancement within your organization and outside of it. Offering growth opportunities and the possibility of internal promotions can incentivize employees to stay and contribute long-term. Even if their future career goals may not include staying at your organization forever, encouraging their growth will only benefit you.
While healthcare benefits might be out of reach, explore other valuable benefits you can provide, such as flexible spending accounts, wellness programs, or access to employee assistance programs. Many companies think offering generous PTO packages will only cost them more, but research says otherwise. Employees given unlimited PTO took less time off on average than those with limited PTO. And employee assistance programs might be easier to implement than you think. Here’s my advice on how to start an employee assistance program of your own.
Traits of empathy, compassion, and approachability within a leader has been shown to significantly impact retention rates. And you don’t need to do it perfectly to make an impact. Simply check in and ask how you can support your employees on a regular basis (even when things seem great, don’t wait until there’s a visceral issue). Take their lead to determine how much they want to share and know that checking in is often enough.
Encourage loyalty and a sense of ownership by including employees in bigger decisions when appropriate. Providing autonomy and responsibility can lead to increased job satisfaction and a deeper sense of commitment to the organization.
Maintain transparent communication with your employees about your company’s vision, challenges, and successes and welcome their input and ideas. An open and honest approach builds trust and a sense of ownership in the company’s success.
